The below translation (in blue) of the Arabic original posting has been making the rounds across Arabic jihadist forums over the past several days. I don’t know the author but he seems to be a follower of my work. I’ve included the full-text, unedited translation here. My response (in green), follows.

Dear Abu al-Qa’qa Mujahid, thanks for your message. I want to respond directly to what I view as your two most important points. First, you wrote: “Have you asked yourself what makes these people put themselves in danger and help the suicide bombers?” The answer is obviously yes. You well know that I’ve made a career out of trying to answer that question.
Jihadists, including yourself, still don’t understand what it is I actually do, so let me explain. I’m not trying to hunt you down or arrest you. There are other people who do that. I don’t have a boss that I give reports to about what I find on your internet sites, as you suggest. I’m a researcher.
I log on to your jihadist discussion forums in order to understand what makes people like Umar Farouq Abdulmutallab think that they can actually change U.S. policy by killing innocent Americans. I’m trying to understand why Nidal Hasan thought that his attack would make life better for Muslims instead of worse. Perhaps you need a lesson on the basics of international politics. As Abd al-Wahhab Muhammad Qaid (Abu Yahya al-Libi’s older brother) himself told me last month from inside of Libyan prison: “for every action that occurs between the West and global jihadists, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” The point is that when you target us, we fight back. You then point to our response and say, see, “America hates Islam.” That causes more jihadists to try and target us, which forces our hand to hunt you down. Listen to me: the United States does not surrender. The more you attack us, the more we will fight you, which is bad for everybody.
The problem is that you are not being honest when you argue that jihadism only exists as a reaction to U.S. crimes against Muslims. You wrote, “Why do you not look at our action as being a reaction to the crimes that your masters are perpetrating against Muslims?” There’s no question that American foreign policy has been problematic over the years for Muslims. I don’t think anyone would dispute you on that. What you don’t understand is that the global jihadist movement’s actions are perpetuating, not solving, your problem.
If you want to improve the situation, jihadists need to make it easier, not harder, for those in the United States who are committed to reducing this cycle of violence between jihadists and the West to do so. There are those in this country who are less concerned about avenging past attacks and instead making sure new ones don’t occur.
But global jihadists need to offer face-saving opportunities to us, just like we need to offer them to you, so that we can collectively disengage militarily. When you drive cars into Times Square that are loaded with explosives, you guarantee that we are going to be more, not less, paranoid about people who say that they hate the United States.
Your second point was that if I would just study Islam more instead of trying to fight against jihadists, I would realize that you’re right and I’m wrong. Again, your argument is so jihadist in nature. It’s either black or white. It’s either with you or against you. Al-Wala wal-Bara may work when you’re ranting with your buddies but it is not a sustainable concept to maintain an international system. The fact is that there are shades of grey in this world. You must make compromises as must we unless you want to have perpetual war with one another.
The irony of this conversation is that I have spent my career trying to understand your ideology, your goals and your senior leadership. I think I have a fairly accurate picture of you and I actually find some of your points to be sound. Far from your worst enemy I might actually one of your most important potential allies in this fight. I am open to dialog. I am eager to reduce the violence on both sides. But we need to start being honest with one another about what this fight is about. Yes you have grievances that likely will never be redressed. The question is whether or not you want to make the world a better or worse place for the next generation.

Let us be clear: you and I would agree that ‘Islamophobes’ are not productive and probably exhibit biases that are unacceptable both intellectually, and morally. I do not view Brigitte Gabrielle as a major, leading foreign policy figure, nor would I place Robert Spencer, or a variety of others whose vitriol merely provides you with the kinds of ‘evidence’ you need to continue to seeth. In short: The United States is not now, and has never been, at war with Islam as Islam. I am not persuaded by your attempt to fill in the blanks on what you impute to be the implicit motivations behind various ideological-political blocs.
Sarah Palin. Certainly some fraction–probably a very small faction–voted for Palin specifically because she represented a non-apologetic approach to her faith. It’s hard to quantify, but it is there. But, that is not really the story behind the ’60 million’ that voted for the Republican ticket. As in every other country on earth, the U.S. has political parties that represent different approaches to major issues. The most important divide among conservatives and liberals is the key question: What is the legitimate role of government in a free society? And secondly: What is the role of individual human responsibility in contemporary American society?
Conservatives come in many flavors, but in general can be subdivided into fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, and national-security conservatives. Social conservatives can be subdivided into differing groups based especially on whether one advocates a more openly acknowledged role for religion in life generally, but also public life. Interestingly, Christians and Muslims and Jews, who are religiously inclined, all view a far more robust role for religion in life, and public life, and would probably find their home in a more religiously conservative subculture of the conservative movement. On the other hand, by its very nature, religion tends toward exclusivity so that Christians would proclaim a specific truth and path to salvation, Muslims another, and Jews another. Among the ‘Palinistas’ there is probably a subset of religious conservatives who would be very uncomfortable with Islamic religiosity, but as I stated in an earlier message, as Americans we have already fought our religious wars and no longer view this as a ground for heresy hunting, terror, and defamation. As long as you buy into the values of our society–liberty under law, equality of opportunity, self-determination–you are absolutely welcome here.
To return to what I find objectionable in your implicit assumption. You state:

You don’t really have any data that can support that ‘probably’. Possibly, maybe, probably, most likely, certainly: these are all categorical assertions, without any genuine data–official, reputable, or even anecdotal. For example, I voted for the McCain/Palin ticket on entirely different grounds: I am a classically-liberally inclined guy, a secular Jew, and a proud believer in America’s promise. I am not inclined to believe the socialist narrative, don’t buy the Left’s oppression and victimization paradigm. That is me. I have many friends who voted for the same reasons. We don’t buy the Leftist view of the world anymore. We are secular.

Dolly, please shed more light on this statement. Hatred of what? Why? When? How? Do you not understand that the United States genuinely acknowledges the ethical and historic right of Islam as a great world religion? Do you not read our textbooks? Do you not attend university classes where Islam is regarded as one of the great prophetic faiths whose pedigree is Abraham, and whose trajectory places it well within the orbit of the ancient near eastern salvation religions? There is no ‘ground reality of hatred’ Dolly. As hard as that might be for you to accept, to convince me you must prove this hatred in words, deeds, intentions, actions, official declarations and statements, overt or even covert sources of evidence.
Recent evidence to the contrary is overwhelming, however. A couple of cases in point. Billy Graham’s son, Franklin Graham, was disinvited from presenting his convocation during a ‘National Day of Prayer’ ceremony because his remarks were definitely prejudicial to Islam. Second: the U.S. defense department removed bible passages that had been inscribed by an arms maker on weapons to be used by American soldiers. When this was discovered, immediate action was taken by the Defense Department. We are not at war with Islam Dolly; we are at war with an international criminal syndicate of takfiri terrorists who are successfully recruiting mostly secular, westernized, and barely Muslim converts, to become targetted munitions in order to supposedly attain the most glorious gifts that are owed the genuine shahid.

This is a worldwide war against the arrogant declaration of war on all who do not subscribe to the global terrorist vision rooted in utopianistic views of tawhid, violently-drawn boundaries of al wala wal bara, obsessively-reductionist views that Islam = terroristic so-called ‘jihad’, takfirist sects whose rampages against their own populations–GIA, Gamaat Islamiyya, so-called ‘Islamic State of Iraq’, etc.

That is the case in your official statements, however there is another sentiment in reality.
There is often a gap between annoucements of a government, and real life in that country.
I’m pretty sure the government of Zimbabwe is talking about “development,” and may even have the word “prosperity” in its motto.
But we don’t base our conclusions on rosy words of Mugabe and Brennan, but we look at ground realities instead.
The reality is that I was just on a variety of different websites belonging to rabid islamophobes and open proponents of Crusades,
and these users were based in countries like the U.S. and UK
Defending ourselves, and counter-attacking Islamofacisism, is seen as akin to: “rude”, as well as turning down the offer (read: threat) to convert or go supine.
-THAT is the crux. Too many “thinkers” refuse to see the forest through the trees.
The methods in which we defend our culture is also seen as weak.
Eventually war will come, and all of Islam’s major centers will be destroyed, including the big white block holding the meteor-fragment (formerly called a Moon God) that Mohammed’s grandfather once took care of, along with the other stones that were the various “gods” of the region’s pagan faith before the child-raper took over the family business and expanded it using murder, robbery, rape, pillage and roan. The Crusades were defensive in nature (except the last one), but it had the effect of keeping these brainwashed, power-hungry, insecure, shame-based savages back within their own realm for a long time.
These days, we don’t see it as a religious war (other than the “super-Christians”) but the Islamist’s do.

You are not “defending yourself,” you are aggressing. The muslims are merely exacting retaliation, i.e. your countrymen jumping from the 100th floor without a safety net is a consequence of your longstanding interference in the region.
There are places in Eastern Europe that are 6500 miles closer to the Middle East than the USA is,
but still those countries have no interest in the Middle East and they practice no meddling there.
You *chose* to be world police, so face the blowback and admit to the root causes. Ask Ron Paul for that matter.
