Abu Abdallah al-Sadeq on the Rise

Al-Sadeq, the former emir of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, has been making increasing press lately as a leading figure in the Libyan rebellion movement.

I had the chance to meet with al-Sadeq in Libya last year at the invitation of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, who helped ensure the release of al-Sadeq and two other leading LIFG leaders.

Attiyatallah Shouts Out to Libyan Homeboys

So, in today’s new audio lecture set to a Jedi-styled Sheikh Attiyatallah backdrop, we learn that the real name of this elusive AQ cleric is actually Shaykh Jamal Ibrahim Ishtaiwi al-Misrati.

The name reminds us that he’s actually Libyan, from Misurata.

This ‘use-my-real-name-to-increase-my-credibility’ strategy is one that AQ types are increasingly using to legitimize themselves with their peeps back home (more on that later). If you recall, he and Abu Yahya already did this once, in their joint eulogy to two Moroccan clerics.  Abu Yahya referred to himself by his old name, Younis al-Sahrawi and Sheikh Attiytallah used his old name of Abd al-Karim al-Libi, both to give props to the boyz back in Morocco.

He’s doing it again to remind people of his roots – and maybe pave the way for him to eventually stroll back as emir of an AQ in Libya franchise.
